See the Northern Lights

See the Northern Lights

In the previous two years I have looked at where to see the Northern Lights in Europe and different ways to enjoy them. In this post I will look at further places to go to see the Northern Lights. As the Auroral Oval circles the planet in the northern latitudes this post will not be limited to one area. We start our round up in North America. There are a great deal of remote locations where the Northern Lights are visible but the logistics of getting there make it hugely expensive. Fortunately there are also places that are much more accessible where you can still see the spectacular display of the Northern Lights. The Great Lakes, USA Seeing the Northern Lights reflected in water is a great way of getting two shows for the price of one. The Great Lakes…

Northern Lights revisited

Northern Lights revisited

A couple of years ago I posted a round up on where to see the Northern Lights in Europe. In this round up I have concentrated on different ways to enjoy the Northern Lights and I have included destinations outside of Europe this time. The Solar Maximum is when there are more particles from the sun hitting the Earth’s atmosphere and causing the auroras around the southern and northern latitudes. This phenomena which began in 2013/14 continues into the 2014/15 winter and as a result interest in the Northern Lights has increased. More tour operators are offering trips to countries where it is most likely to see them. It should be noted, hover, that the Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed so make sure you choose a package that includes other Arctic activities and consider the Northern Lights as a bonus….

7 Christmas Markets to visit

7 Christmas Markets to visit

It is the time of year when we begin thinking about a short break to one of the many Christmas markets across Britain and Europe. I have chosen seven Christmas market experiences to consider from the many that are available. Choose one of these and you will not be disappointed Winchester When we think of Christmas markets we usually think of other parts of Europe but we have some very atmospheric ones in the UK. One of my favourites is the one in the shadow of the magnificent Winchester Cathedral. Once the capital of England and home to Alfred the Great it is a very atmospheric city at Christmas time. The Market surrounds an ice rink in the Cathedral’s Inner Close. There are a great many arts and crafts mostly from the UK in the wooden chalets huddled in the…

6 Hot Autumn Colour Hotspots

6 Hot Autumn Colour Hotspots

In the Northern hemisphere the days are getting shorter and the nights cooler. It’s the trigger for the trees to change. Chlorophyll breaks down and the green colour disappears allowing the other colours to make their appearance. When the sun shines and the skies are an eye-splitting blue the trees of autumn, or fall as my North American readers call it, present a spectacle worthy of any natural wonder of the world. So where do you head for to see the best of the autumn colours? North America Traditionally it is the New England states that are associated with the best autumn colours. Heading up to New Hampshire or Vermont will ensure you see best of the colours as the glucose trapped in the maple leaves turns the leaves bright red or golden orange. Timing is critical as the planets…

Where to see the Northern Lights

Where to see the Northern Lights

I will never forget the night I was in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, and experienced the Northern Lights show. Down at the waters edge with our backs to the city lights, such as they were, we watched entranced as pink and green curtains of light rippled across the sky. It was a magical moment – actually over an hour. Currently, because of the solar maximum, conditions are at their best for seeing the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. NASA predicts there will be a double peak during this cycle with the first this winter and the second next winter. It’s never been a better time to head north to hunt the Northern lights or Fire Fox as the Sami people call it. The Aurora Borealis, more commonly known as the Northern Lights, is a phenomena caused by electrically charged…

Activity holidays to get you moving

Activity holidays to get you moving

A report published in the Lancet suggests that as many deaths are caused by inactivity as by smoking (see BBC report). Not enough people are exercising apparently. So here are a few ideas for activity holidays to get you moving that I have tried. Cycling along the Danube Cycling along any river is relatively easy if you go with the flow because rivers flow downhill. Pick one of the great rivers of Europe to cycle beside and because they were once the great trade routes you will pass plenty of history, several cities and loads of great scenery. I chose a 300km section of the Danube to Vienna. I cycled each section and had my luggage transported ahead to my next hotel for me. All of this was arranged by ??? Who also offer other cycle routes along other European…
