Where in the World (345)

I was initially quite surprised that so many readers identified the city so quickly. I decided to find out how some of the regular quizzers went about identifying the cities in “Where in the World…” and specifically how they identified the city in last week’s distorted image.

One reader spotted a flag which gave him the country and a likely city to start his research. It was then just a simple matter to Google the name of the city and find a photograph of a building that matched the features of the distorted image. A second reader simply Googled “eagle on top of a dome” and looked for similar images.

Another reader used the style of architecture, recognising it as being “distinctly South American” and then resorted to Google. Finally, one reader Googled “cities with cupolas” and looking at the images until she found a similar building.

Google it seems is a handy tool to use when trying to identify fiendishly distorted images posted on these pages. It is gratifying that readers are going to such lengths if at first, they don’t recognise the city. Thank you to all those who let me know how they go about their detective work.

Using whatever feature to search on Google they all identified Mexico City correctly. The building is the Palacio De Bella Artes.

Congratulations this week to Todd (@toddunctious), Atul (@pixodentist), Jackie (@jackiesjourneys), Tim (@timofnewbury) and Beverley (@BevSackville) who identified the city correctly, using a variety of clues and Google, as Mexico City.

This week’s distorted image has a couple of really helpful clues that will narrow down the area to research in identifying the city. I imagine that some will resort to Google again. There are two cities with the same name so you will have to be specific in your answer. Giving the state, province, county or country will be sufficient. Good luck.

As usual, you can leave your answers in the comments below or on my Twitter feed (@lethers) with the hashtag #WITW345. If you are on Twitter then you can Direct Message me with the answer which will be hidden from other readers. Please use the hashtag #WITW345. It makes finding the answers in a continually changing Twitter feed so much easier; your answer is less likely to be overlooked.

You do not have to be on Twitter to send in your answer. You can also email me with the answer here.
